Made from remnants of the historic Broadview Hotel, these pieces encapsulate the elements I was able to retrieve from the site before its most recent major renovation. Elements include spindles from the original main staircase, locker doors for the strippers of the more recent tenant known as “Jillys”, original tin ceiling, structural wood, sub-flooring and tile as a few examples.
The first two pieces in this series are framed in an original round hotel window, of the few set at the main entrance to the building at the corner of Broadview and Queen. The windows are now retrofitted with modern fittings but remain the same circular shape to the building’s original design.
In making these pieces it is my attempt to contemplate the history of our architectural spaces, to visualize the many past lives it has had through the different purposes it has been given by it’s various owners as it has passed hands.
